VyprVPN is a well-known VPN brand. This is primarily due to the fact that they are part of Golden Frog, a large internet services conglomerate that provides customers and enterprise companies with increased privacy and security. As part of a large, multi-product company, they have access to more technology and resources than many of their smaller competitors, with the biggest beneficiaries being their customers.
On the surface, it seems that VyprVPN executes a well strategized marketing plan in regard to their features offering. It appears like they offer the usual features that several other top VPN services provide. However, you need to dig deeper in order to see the full picture of what VyprVPN offers to their customer base. In short? It is outstanding. For starters, let’s take a look at some of the key features they have on offer:
- Unlimited bandwidth
- Unlimited server switches (no fees either)
- No throttling
- Zero Logging DNS (which we will get to in the Privacy section)
- Multiple encryption protocols (OpenVPN, L2TP, PPTP, Chameleon)
- 1 connection, or 2 or 3 simultaneous connections (depending on which plan you sign up with)
- Apps for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, TV and router
- Kill switch to block all internet and network traffic when VyprVPN disconnects
- Integration with various apps and services such as Boxee, Viscocity and Feat VPN
- Free online storage account with Dump Truck
Moreover, with VyprVPN you have access to over 200,000 IP addresses and 700 servers across almost 50 countries! This is, without a doubt, one of the largest offerings we have seen in the VPN industry. VyprVPN Server Locations: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Panama, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States, and Vietnam.
Here are where things start to get interesting. A little back drop is needed so bear with us. Golden Frog was started as a direct result of the NSA’s ‘Room 641A’ surveillance program on AT&T’s networks back in 2003. The Golden Frog mission? “To build tools that help preserve an open and secure internet experience while respecting user privacy.” Thus, VyprVPN was founded a short while later. VyprVPN has all of the latest security features you would expect from a top VPN provider – multiple protocols for encryption (as noted above in the features section), Chameleon technology using OpenVPN 256-bit protocol to prevent DPI, VPN blocking and throttling, and a NAT firewall for added security. However, some people have questioned the authenticity of VyprVPN’s security. Though the company is based in Switzerland on paper, their offices however are in the U.S. Due to VyprVPN operating their own servers, this technically makes them responsible for handing over information if a DMCA notice is presented. Now, you may be wondering: “but VyprVPN doesn’t keep any logs so there’s no information to hand over.” This is semi-accurate – VyprVPN does not log a user’s traffic at all or packet inspection of your traffic. However, they do retain your session data for 30 days which they claim is for troubleshooting or billing issues. But, if there were a criminal investigation opened against you, they would need to cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies (though law enforcement must provide a subpoena). Still, if you’re not the criminal type, there is absolutely nothing to worry about and those people questioning VyprVPN’s security level is all fluff. Moreover, VyprVPN uses proprietary technology called VyprDNS which is 100% controlled by Golden Frog, which means when checking who is the server hosting company, the Golden Frog network does not show as the source. VyprVPN created this privacy feature to avoid DNS manipulation. User data doesn’t leave their network. Overall, VyprVPN does exactly as you would expect in regard to security. They protect your information and identity, and they eliminate censorship. We were extremely satisfied by the level of security VyprVPN provides to its customers.
VyprVPN Security Options
Here is why you should start with VyprVPN if you are looking for a quality VPN service. VyprVPN is one of the only VPN providers that offers a free plan (3 day free trial) to its customer base. Though it is limited in nature, this plan enables you to test out the service prior to making a commitment. This alone shows VyprVPN’s confidence in their service. As for their paid plans: VyprVPN is nestled smack in the middle of the pack. Though their paid plans may come off as slightly more expensive than others, you need to look at the value proposition. For a premium service like VyprVPN and all that’s on offer, the pricing options are certainly competitive. You can choose between 3 different pricing plans:
- Basic – $6.67/month billed annually (or $9.99/month billed monthly)
- Pro – $8.33/month billed annually (or $14.99/month billed monthly)
- Premier – $10/month billed annually (or $19.99/month billed monthly)
Each plan comes with different features. Naturally, if you were to choose the Premier plan, it opens you up to VyprVPN’s service in its entirety. However, for starters, we recommend the Pro plan. You can always upgrade at a later date.
This is arguably the standout “feature” for VyprVPN. Since they operate their own servers, we were expecting incredibly fast speeds and that’s exactly what we got. Since unlimited means unlimited with VyprVPN, there is no speed cap they put on you, even if your use is considered excessive. Moreover, there is no noticeable difference in speed between your regular internet connection and when using VyprVPN. We have a 100 Mb/s plan, though we usually see about 85Mb/s. When we connected to a VyprVPN server in Hong Kong and Mexico? We clocked out at 84Mb/s and 86Mb/s respectively.
Ease of Use
The VyprVPN installation process is a breeze like most other top VPN providers. Installing the client took less than two minutes. All you need to do is provide a name, e-mail address and payment method after the download process. There was nothing that stood out during this process. However, the real benefit to using VyprVPN is the overall ease of use. First off, we can’t say enough about website usability. The VyprVPN website is one of the cleanest and most straightforward VPN sites we have ever come across – even more so than the highly regarded ExpressVPN site. Navigation is unbelievably simple. The client dashboard is straightforward in nature. Switching servers/cities or connecting/disconnecting comes at the click of your mouse. The software interface shows a nice graph of your speed. It also shows your IP address, your session duration, which protocol you are running, and if the NAT firewall is active. Downloading and using the apps are on another level – one of the best we have seen. In short, in terms of usability, VyprVPN outperforms the competition on almost every level.
VyprVPN Software Interface
There is no question that VyprVPN is one of the leaders in customer support. The feel is more of a corporate culture, yet you are getting ‘mom and pop’ support. What do we mean? With a corporate culture, there is generally no shortage of options at your disposal, and this is true with VyprVPN. Though there is no phone number to call, we have yet to see a VPN provider offer phone support. Moreover, VyprVPN offers live chat, which we are extremely fond of! The only other VPN provider we have seen to offer live chat is PureVPN. It is very standard to see a contact form via the website for a VPN provider, even the larger ones. While VyprVPN offers this web form, they also offer tutorials and a help center. Don’t knock these options – they are extremely helpful. Moreover, VyprVPN is heavily active on social media. Their claim that they are here to help 24/7/365 is valid.
